KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for all activities in the South China Sea to be addressed within the framework of international law to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes for all parties involved.

He stressed that compliance with international law is key to fostering a win-win approach.

“Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed, the secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned the importance of compliance with international law.

“If discussions are held within that framework, it will certainly be a win-win for both sides,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the gala dinner for the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials’ Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) at Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Wednesday (Aug 13)

Abang Johari also clarified that past incidents in the South China Sea should not be labelled as “intrusions” but rather activities that warrant constructive solutions.

He also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for choosing Kuching as the venue for the meeting, citing Sarawak’s strategic location facing the South China Sea.

“I believe this engagement will bring both parties closer and further strengthen Asean-China cooperation, particularly in legal matters related to the South China Sea,” he added.

Meanwhile, during his speech, Abang Johari said the state government is proud to be part of Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean 2025, and will always be firmly committed to advancing the whole nation’s efforts.

“Indeed, it is our firm belief that this meeting signifies our collective efforts to realise our shared commitment to peace, stability and constructive cooperation in the South China Sea.

“This region is our shared home, and together, we have the responsibility to ensure it remains a sea of peace and prosperity,” he said.
