KLANG: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus has officially been rebranded as UPM Sarawak, signalling a new chapter for the institution.

The rebranding seeks to further empower research, higher education and community development in East Malaysia.

It was officiated by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also UPM Chancellor, during a ceremony held at Istana Alam Shah on Monday (June 30).

Describing the rebranding as a forward-looking initiative, Sharafuddin said the move reflected UPM’s commitment to strengthening its role in Sarawak and the wider Borneo region, while also aligning with the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations in the state.

“This is a proud moment. UPM Sarawak is not only a centre of excellence in agriculture, forestry, and food security, but also a key driver of national development in Sarawak and a competitive institution at the regional and international levels,” he said.

The event was graced by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, along with Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Also present were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Minister of Higher Education (MOHE), Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, and State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

Sharafuddin expressed gratitude to the MOHE for its support in facilitating the rebranding effort, highlighting the ministry’s role in enabling greater access to quality education and advancing Malaysia’s food security agenda.

“Continued support is vital in nurturing talent and developing expertise to drive socio-economic progress, particularly in Sarawak, through UPM’s Food Security Action Plan,” he added.
