KUCHING: A berambeh gathering hosted by Urban Capsule last Tuesday offered a glimpse into Sarawak’s festive traditions while fostering community connection among guests from diverse backgrounds.

Centred on the concept of berambeh, a Sarawakian practice of visiting friends and relatives during festive periods, the event brought together backpackers, remote workers and locals in a shared cultural experience.

Held on March 31, the gathering featured a ketupat-making masterclass led by Nazirul, 31, and Shalmas, 33, who guided participants through the traditional palm-leaf weaving technique.

For many attendees, it was their first attempt at crafting the iconic diamond-shaped rice casing, turning the activity into both a learning experience and a light-hearted challenge.

Beyond the hands-on session, the programme reflected efforts to sustain cultural practices among younger generations, demonstrating that traditional knowledge can still resonate when presented in an engaging and inclusive setting.

The event also served as a platform for networking, with participants exchanging stories and building new connections in a relaxed environment.

Guests were also treated to a selection of Raya delicacies, contributing to an atmosphere that felt more like a casual gathering among friends than a formal event.

Strategically located near the upcoming ART Station and close to Hikmah Exchange, Urban Capsule is positioning itself as more than accommodation, but as a space that supports cultural engagement and community building.

The berambeh session underscored the importance of keeping traditions alive through participation, highlighting how cultural practices continue to thrive when shared collectively
