MIRI: The Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri Branch has raised concerns over the worsening shortage of gas cylinders in the city, which has become increasingly critical in recent weeks.
Its president, Mohammad Hafidz Rohani, said the situation is not only affecting businesses, particularly those in the food and beverage sector, but also households that rely on gas cylinders for daily use.
“Reports from traders and consumers indicate that they are facing long queues, with more than 100 people seen waiting yesterday to obtain a limited supply.
“Unfortunately, many had to leave empty-handed due to insufficient stock,” he said in a statement today (Feb 14).
He emphasised that this issue not only disrupts business operations but also adds further strain on the public, who are already struggling with rising living costs.
“DUBS Miri believes this crisis requires immediate intervention and a more sustainable solution from both the authorities and gas suppliers. We urge the relevant parties to increase supply without delay.
“Suppliers must ensure an immediate boost in deliveries to Miri to ease the pressure on both businesses and consumers,” the statement read.
DUBS also called on the relevant agencies to streamline distribution by implementing more efficient allocation strategies to prevent supply-demand imbalances.
“They must also establish a stock control mechanism. To prevent recurring shortages, a more effective stock monitoring system is needed, including better oversight of supply chains and fairer distribution among businesses and consumers,” he stressed.
Additionally, DUBS urged PETROS to accelerate and expand the installation of natural gas systems here, particularly for households, schools, and commercial premises.
“This initiative would reduce dependence on gas cylinders, providing a more stable and cost-effective long-term solution for consumers.
“We hope the authorities will take this issue seriously and adopt proactive measures to ensure a stable energy supply for businesses and the community in Miri.
“DUBS Miri will continue monitoring the situation and is ready to work with all stakeholders to find the best solutions for the wellbeing of the people and the continuity of businesses in Miri,” he said.
