WASHINGTON, United States (US): The US is providing Sri Lanka with USD2 million (around RM8.24 million) in life-saving assistance following Tropical Cyclone Ditwah, the US State Department said on Wednesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“In response to the severe impact of Tropical Cyclone Ditwah, the US is providing USD2 million in emergency life-saving assistance for people in need in Sri Lanka,” the statement said.
Washington will also leverage the Pentagon’s strategic airlift capabilities to support disaster response efforts, it added.
US diplomats are working closely with the Sri Lankan Government and relief organisations to ensure that assistance is distributed efficiently and reaches the most affected people, according to the statement.
In late November, Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre said that at least 355 people have been killed in the landslides and floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, while 366 others remain missing.
More than 1.1 million people have been affected by the severe weather. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK/RIA NOVOSTI
