WASHINGTON: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters was closed on Monday, with employees instructed to work remotely, United Press International (UPI) reported.
An internal email sent just after midnight stated that only essential personnel would be allowed on-site at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C.
Attempts to access USAID’s website and social media accounts were unsuccessful as of 8 am (EST).
Elon Musk, head of the White House’s unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said on X Spaces that USAID was being restructured with President Donald Trump’s backing.
The closure follows recent administrative changes, including the temporary reassignment of two senior security officials.
Trump has previously questioned USAID’s operational structure, and Musk noted ongoing efforts to assess its effectiveness and alignment with national priorities.
USAID, an independent agency funded by Congress, has long played a role in global humanitarian efforts. – BERNAMA
