USD 5.2 Billion petrochemical and refinery project to transform Sarawak’s industrial landscape

KUCHING: In a significant development for Sarawak’s industrial sector, Beijing BECA Sci-Tech Co Ltd has reaffirmed its commitment to invest USD 5.2 billion in an integrated petrochemical and refinery project.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also the Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment (MINTRED), recently met Beijing BECA Sci-Tech Co Ltd chairman Dong Chao, to discuss the proposed project.

In a statement, it was mentioned that BECA has actively engaged with the Sarawak Government to ensure the realisation of this ambitious proposal, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“BECA had already conducted soil and hydrology studies in Sarawak for the proposed USD 5.2 billion petrochemical and refinery integrated project,” the statement added.

BECA is collaborating with industry giants Sinopec Engineering Incorporation (SEI) and China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) to execute this massive undertaking.

The project is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2024.

Awang Tengah, who also serves as the Second Minister for Urban Development and Natural Resources, expressed his gratitude for BECA’s commitment and assured the company that the Government will do its utmost best to facilitate the successful implementation of the project in Sarawak.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh; Advisor (SME) to MINTRED Sarawak Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais; Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong; Deputy Chief of Mission, Malaysian Embassy in the People’s Republic of China, Sanmugan Subramanian; Acting Permanent Secretary to MINTRED Sarawak Dzulkornain Masron; chief executive officer, Regional Corridor Development Authority, Datuk Ismawi Ismuni; chief executive officer, InvestSarawak, Timothy Ong, and others.
