MIRI: According to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, opting for Malaysian products is seen as a potential solution to the problem of rising living costs and diminished purchasing power.
He stated that the current economic climate provides an opportunity for both the public and entrepreneurs to choose Malaysian products over foreign counterparts. Sayuthi emphasised that people are seeking alternatives for their daily goods due to the reduction in purchasing power caused by the increasing cost of living.

He mentioned that consumers are already careful with their spending, ensuring that the products they buy offer value for money and are of good quality at a reasonable price. Buying local products, which often provide better value compared to imported goods, can help reduce living costs while supporting local entrepreneurs.
Sayuthi made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Malaysian Goods Carnival Mini Tour, Sarawak Zone at Bintang Megamall yesterday (October 20). He also encouraged local entrepreneurs to embrace Sarawak’s diverse mix of cultures as a source of innovation and economic opportunities.

He highlighted the unique demographics of Sarawak, with over 40 sub-ethnic groups, each having its own language, culture, and lifestyle. This diversity contributes to the uniqueness of Sarawak’s cultural arts, resulting in a variety of handicrafts, food, clothes, and other products falling under the umbrella of Malaysian goods.
Sayuthi emphasised the importance of not wasting this diversity but instead leveraging it to grow the nation’s economy, develop local entrepreneurs, and elevate Malaysian products to an international level.

He further assured that KPDN is committed to facilitating the expansion of Malaysian products into both domestic and foreign markets. This effort encompasses various segments, including handicrafts, furniture, fashion, as well as food and beverages and beauty products.
He mentioned that strategic initiatives, such as the Malaysian Goods Carnival, are held annually to promote Malaysian goods. The Sarawak leg of the Mini Tour, which runs until October 22, is part of the broader Malaysian Goods Purchase Campaign (KBBM) initiated by KPDN.

The carnival features 18 chosen exhibitors showcasing a diverse array of products unique to Sarawak. This year, the KBBM focuses on empowering local products in the retail industry and online platforms, digital animation media, themed sales initiatives, and carnivals across five regions in Malaysia.
The mini tour serves as a platform for micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) players from various regions to present their products to the local community through exhibitions, sales, advocacy sessions, and engaging activities for visitors.

Also in attendance were KPDN Trade, Distribution, and Business Sector senior director Rohaizi Bahari; Business Development Division director Ahmad Rizal Khalit; Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin; Sabah director Georgie Abas; and Labuan director Junaidah Arbain.
