SIBU: Academics, researchers, and educators at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) are encouraged to write and publish books to disseminate their knowledge and discoveries to the wider community.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said that the experiences gained in lecture halls, laboratories, or the field could lead to valuable discoveries that should be shared with the world.

“You never know who you might inspire or what changes you could spark simply by sharing your work,” he said in his text speech read by UTS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, at the UTS Book Launch Ceremony here yesterday (Feb 7).

He added that experienced writers and authors are also encouraged to collaborate with writers from other institutions or research organisations to produce impactful publications.

“Great ideas often grow even bigger when shared. With strong collaboration, publications will not only have an impact at the local level but also have the potential to create a global influence,” he said.

The Nangka assemblyman also suggested that UTS, through its publishing unit, take strategic steps to establish partnerships with state agencies and organisations to set up research chairs.

“This will enhance research output, contribute to critical areas of study, and, more importantly, help position Sarawak as a leader in knowledge creation and innovation,” he added.

In an effort to strengthen UTS’s standing, he pointed out the importance of high-quality publications that could improve the university’s ranking in MyRA and serve as a benchmark for academic excellence.

“Publishing is not just about printing books but about publishing with purpose. This benefits not only students and researchers but also serves as a crucial reference for policymakers,” he said.

Additionally, he encouraged UTS to expand its collaborative network with leading global universities to enrich the research ecosystem and enhance the institution’s international reputation.

Meanwhile, Dr Khairuddin, in his speech, said that UTS Publisher had achieved another milestone with the launch of eight new book titles, part of a total of 16 publications throughout 2024.

“These books are the work of talented academics and researchers at UTS, reflecting their continuous dedication to disseminating knowledge and scientific expertise.

“To all the authors, I extend my congratulations on your efforts and perseverance. This contribution not only enriches the academic world but also benefits society as a whole,” he said.

A total of eight books were launched yesterday, entitled Youthful Vision Volume 1 and 2, Algal Biodiesel: Alternative Fuel and Potential, HALO: A Symphony of Nature and Innovation, The Inward Turn of Home, Guava: A Journey Through Oil-Wax-Gum Coating, School of Foundation Studies: Mechanical Physics Kickstarter Workbook, and Typology and Morphology of Historical Areas: A Case Study of George Town, Penang, Malaysia.
