SIBU: University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) highlighted the unique identity of the state’s diverse community at its Gong Xi Raya 2026 celebration here.
Its outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the celebration, which combines Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year, reflects the harmony and spirit of togetherness in Sibu and throughout Sarawak.
According to him, the life of people from various backgrounds in this state, who live, work and celebrate festivals together in an atmosphere of harmony, is a uniqueness that should be preserved.
“A tradition of gathering like this symbolises the harmony that has been integrated into the life of the community here,” he said at the event held at UTS’ Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Hall here on Tuesday (March 31).
Khairuddin added that such celebrations not only bring joy, but can also strengthen the sense of belonging among university residents regardless of race and religion.
He also emphasised that the festive season is the best time to strengthen relationships, forgive each other and forget all differences, thus practising noble values in daily life.
Meanwhile, he also expressed his appreciation to all UTS staff for their support and cooperation during his eight years and two months at the helm of the university.
He said the commitment shown by academic and non-academic staff as well as students has been the main catalyst in shaping the direction and achievements of the university.
“UTS is now growing as the main choice for Sarawak students and has successfully strengthened its international profile as a result of the dedication of all parties,” he said.
Looking back on his tenure, he described it as a journey full of challenges, development and meaningful achievements.
“I am confident that UTS will continue to excel and achieve greater success in the future,” added Khairuddin who will assume the post of Special Officer at the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development.
