SIBU: The Mitsubishi Corporation Kuala Lumpur (MC KUL) International Scholarship represents more than just financial aid; it is a historic milestone for the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

According to UTS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, the scholarship is the first international scholarship initiative launched at UTS, symbolising the university’s firm commitment to global engagement and academic excellence.

“It has set a powerful precedent for future collaborations, and elevated the aspirations of our university and its students,” he said at a press conference held at the university’s senate room here today.

He added that UTS’ partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation, a globally respected brand, is a prestigious collaboration that the university holds in the highest regard.

“Your association with our institution not only boosts our profile but also serves as a reflection of our shared values: integrity, excellence and social impact.

“As a state university owned by the Sarawak Government, UTS sees this initiative as a vital bridge between Mitsubishi Corporation and Sarawak.

“It is a meaningful connection – one that contributes to local community development, and opens the door for greater understanding and shared purpose between industry and academia,” he added.

He stressed that the real impact of this scholarship is clear: it empowers underprivileged and hardworking students from across Sarawak to complete their studies by alleviating financial burdens, allowing them to focus fully on their academic journey and future careers.

Meanwhile, General Manager of MC KUL, Kosuke Makino, said that the scholarship programme is a proud example of Mitsubishi Corporation’s commitment to empowering the next generation.

“The MC KUL International Scholarship aims to nurture individuals who will contribute meaningfully to their communities and the global society,” he said.

Touching on the corporation’s background, Makino said that as a global integrated business enterprise, Mitsubishi Corporation, operates across a broad spectrum of industries.

“Our journey began with the establishment of the company in Japan in 1954, and we’ve since grown into a trusted name worldwide.

“In Malaysia, our story started in 1959 with the opening of our Kuala Lumpur office.

“Over the decades, we’ve expanded our footprint in tandem with the nation’s progress, engaging in diverse sectors such as natural resources (especially oil and gas), food, automotive, machinery, and more.

“Today, we remain deeply committed to Malaysia’s continued growth.

“Building on our longstanding foundation, we are actively exploring new and innovative business opportunities across emerging sectors, with the aim of creating sustainable value for the future,” he said.

He added that at the heart of the corporation’s operations lies its corporate philosophy, namely the Three Corporate Principles: Corporate Responsibility to Society, Integrity and Fairness, and Global Understanding Through Business.

“These principles guide not only our business conduct but also our commitment to social contribution.

“Globally, our philanthropic efforts focus on three key themes: Realising an Inclusive Society, Empowering the Next Generation, and Conserving the Environment,” he stressed.

Five students received the scholarship for 2024, namely Tiong Wei Jie, Pamela Louis, Darren Phang Jun Xuan, Dayang Nursyarmeen Abang Dahlan, and Lai Neng Jie.

These five students bring the total number of scholars who have received the scholarship since the programme’s inception in 2022 to 15.
