Van bursts into flames, worker suffers burns

BINTULU: An Indonesian worker sustained facial burns when the van he was traveling in caught fire on Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, near Poliklinik Bintulu, here today (Mar 8).

The victim, Feri Bayuanggara, 25, who works for Vision One Petrol & Service, suffered burns to his face in the terrifying incident.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by a gasoline canister inside the vehicle. 

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), they received an emergency call at 8.43 am, and a team arrived at the scene within two minutes. 

“Upon arrival, the team found the fire had already spread to the driver’s area and the passenger door of the red Perodua Rusa van,” the statement said.

Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the flames while emergency responders provided initial treatment to Feri before rushing him to Bintulu Hospital.

The operation was wrapped up by 9 am, with firefighters returning to the station at 9.23 am.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities are urging those handling flammable materials to exercise extreme caution and follow safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
