KUCHING: The state government’s plans to prohibit vaping in Sarawak will safeguard the community from long-term harm.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport and. Entrepreneur Development II (Entrepreneur Development), Dr Ripin Lamat, said the growing popularity of vape products, specifically liquid-based ones, poses a serious threat to the well-being of Sarawak’s youth.
“The negative effects of vaping are far greater than the economic benefits.
“These products can destroy our young people and ultimately undermine the values of our future generations,” he said to reporters during the Girl Guides Health Carnival 2025 at the MBKS Foyer here today.
As such Dr Ripin urged young entrepreneurs in the industry to explore alternative business sectors that contribute positively to society.
“My advice is to look for other business sectors that are more suitable and capable of developing our society.
“The effects of vaping are very negative, especially when misused by young people.
“It can damage families, communities, and even the nation as a whole.
“Choose another sector that is more sustainable and beneficial,” he stressed.
Dr Ripin remarked that Sarawak has recorded among the highest vape usage in Malaysia, hence prohibition alone may be insufficient to address the issue.
He called for a multi-pronged approach combining awareness campaigns, education, and community engagement.
“At the initial stage, we need awareness and educational programmes to prevent the use of vaping devices.
“There must also be collaboration between parents, families, government agencies, NGOs, and the community at large to gradually reduce usage,” he said.
He said strong law enforcement must complement education and awareness efforts to ensure the effectiveness of any ban.
