BERLIN: Champion Max Verstappen has equalled Ayrton Senna’s Formula One victory tally and claimed Red Bull’s 100th triumph as a constructor as he cruised to his 41st career win at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, reported German news agency (dpa).
The championship leader took his fourth consecutive win and sixth from eight races this season after a powerful start, not giving a chance to Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who was quickly overtaken by the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.
But Alonso made a move on Hamilton to recover his second place position in lap 23 following a safety car phase, which was triggered after George Russell hit the wall in the other Mercedes. Hamilton, meanwhile, had to settle for third.
Verstappen tops the drivers’ standings with 195 points, 69 more than team-mate Sergio Perez who was sixth in Canada but got the fastest lap. F1 next heads to Austria on July 2. – BERNAMA-dpa
