KUCHING: The passing of veteran broadcast journalist Datuk Karam Singh Walia has left a profound impact on Malaysia’s journalism landscape, with his distinctive reporting style and contributions fondly remembered by many.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Karam’s departure marked a significant loss to the industry, describing him as a familiar and influential figure in Malaysian broadcasting.
“He always coloured news delivery with his own unique style. Anyone who watched TV3’s Buletin Utama, especially from the 1990s until around 2014, would remember him for the pantun he used to end each report — a signature identity that remains in the memory of many,” he said in a Facebook posting.
Fahmi added that he was among those who consistently followed Karam’s reports and deeply appreciated his dedication and contributions to the field of broadcasting. He also extended his condolences to Karam’s younger brother, Jasbant Singh, Managing Editor of News and Current Affairs at Media Prima, as well as to the family.
Karam passed away at his home in Klang at 3.30am today.
He was best known as a news anchor and investigative reporter for TV3’s Buletin Utama in the 1990s and 2000s, gaining recognition for his high-impact special reports on issues such as pollution, public safety and environmental sustainability.
His use of pantun and proverbs in reporting became a hallmark of his storytelling, setting him apart from his peers and endearing him to audiences nationwide.
Karam served with Media Prima for 20 years before retiring in 2014 due to health issues. He had been battling liver and kidney disease since 2022.
Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Malaysia Press Institute’s Best Television Environmental Journalist award for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007, as well as two Best TV Journalist awards at the Anugerah Seri Angkasa.
