KUCHING: In celebration of International Women’s Day recognized globally on March 8, the Padawan Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) hosted a three days extravanga event called “Embrace Market” at the Green Heights Mall from March 8 – 10.

During the launching ceremony, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said that International Women’s Day is a great honor to all women in the world for their achievements regardless of obstacles presented by their nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, politic or economic stature.

He also noted that women in both prosperous and impoverished nations have experienced International Women’s Day on an international level.

“A harmonious and equitable society is the aim, ambition and purpose for celebrating International Women’s Day,” he said.

Yap concurred that by celebrating International Women’s Day, women were expressing that laws and policies established by any government must be applied equitably and should not be affected by an individual’s ethnicity or religion.

“In Sarawak, we are lucky to have a solid GPS government led by the Premier of Sarawak who is fair to all Sarawakians regardless of race and religion,” he said.

One example is the state government-owned higher education institutions, which will provide free tertiary education to all Sarawakians by 2025.

Unifor is also another example, where all other religions are protected.

For the inquisitive mind, why is March 8 designated as International Women’s Day? It was after Russian women demanded “bread and peace” during a 1917 military protest. It signifies that women were able to speak up for their rights and be heard.

“In conclusion, I urge everyone to remain supportive of the current government in order to accomplish Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030’s vision of a prosperous Sarawak by 2030, if not sooner rather than later,” he said.
