DARO: The implementation of the Jalan Rumah Jingga project is set to significantly improve rural connectivity in the Sungai Lengan area.
It will provide a safer and more systematic access route for local communities while supporting socio-economic activities and access to education.
The project, officially launched with a groundbreaking ceremony at Dewan Serbaguna Nanga Singat here recently, will see the construction of a new road linking Rumah Jingga, David Multifarm, Rumah Seli, Rumah Guang and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Singat.
The ceremony was officiated by Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad, signalling the formal commencement of the high-impact development project.
Dr Safiee said the road construction is crucial to enhancing rural connectivity, particularly in linking community settlements with local economic areas, educational institutions and essential services.
He stressed that the project goes beyond physical infrastructure development, describing it as a strategic investment by the Sarawak government to ensure more equitable and inclusive access to infrastructure, while narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas.
“With better access, the movement of agricultural produce and community economic activities will be smoother, access to schools and public facilities will be faster, and the safety and comfort of residents in their daily lives will be improved.
“When access is improved, the quality of life of the people will also improve. That is the main objective of building this road to ensure rural development truly delivers direct benefits to the rakyat,” he said.
The project, implemented by the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID), is scheduled to take 130 weeks, and is expected to be fully completed by June 13, 2028.
The scope of work includes the construction of 11.5 kilometres of road, comprising 9.6 kilometres of main road and 1.9 kilometres of spur roads, as well as a 90-metre-long bridge with a width of eight metres to enhance road safety and accessibility.
The project also involves the use of 41 hectares of land in the Nanga Singat–Sungai Lengan area.
For land acquisition purposes, compensation totalling RM1.1 million has been made to 53 recipients through 92 cheques, which were presented by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on April 16, 2025.
The event also witnessed the presentation of Letters of Notification for Project Approval under the Forest Concession Area Fund Board, involving two school upgrading projects—at SK Singat, Sibu, valued at RM564,000, and at SK Sungai Lengan, Sibu, worth RM446,000.
