KUCHING: Villagers are being empowered to serve as frontline responders in emergency situations under a new initiative aimed at strengthening fire safety and preparedness across Kuching South.

Kuching South City Council Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, said the establishment of Community Firefighting Teams in local villages, particularly those considered high-risk, would play a crucial role in enhancing public safety.

Speaking at the launch of the Zone 1 Sarawak Community Fire Programme at the Tabuan Jaya Fire and Rescue Station today, he highlighted the need for trained individuals within communities to act swiftly in emergencies before the arrival of official firefighting services.

“With the right training and continuous support from the Fire and Rescue Department, these teams can make a real difference in protecting lives and property,” Wee said.

He also cautioned against complacency, noting that the threat of fire often feels remote – until disaster strikes close to home.

“Prevention, awareness and preparedness must be a collective priority.

“Fire safety knowledge should not only be practised but actively shared among family, neighbours and the wider community,” he urged.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Deputy Director, Tiong Ling Hii, stressed that the programme goes beyond traditional awareness efforts by providing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.

“This initiative takes fire safety directly into the heart of communities, training village chiefs and longhouse leaders to serve as key safety advocates among their people,” he said.

Participants are also exposed to simulated firefighting exercises, allowing them to gain practical experience in handling emergencies.

The two-day programme welcomed 50 participants from five villages around the Tabuan Jaya area: Kampung Tabuan Paya, Kampung Tabuan Jaya Tengah, Kampung Tabuan Dayak (Bukit), Kampung Sungai Nada and Kampung Tabuan Laru.
