PENDING assemblywoman Violet Yong is a well-known figure in Sarawak’s political scene, having been around for nearly 20 years.
And, truth be told, her signature vintage hairstyle has over the years set her apart in the political arena.
Here, she opens up about her simple beauty routine, personal style preferences, and the ways she copes with stress with Sarawak Tribune.
Sarawak Tribune: What’s the story behind your hairstyle?
Violet: I’ve had this hairstyle for nearly 20 years. It’s hand-styled and easy to maintain, which fits my lifestyle. Some people say I should change it, but I like the vintage, Victorian-inspired look. I just touch it up daily, adjust a few pins, and I’m good to go. It also helps with my oily scalp, if left unstyled, it can appear greasy and unkempt.
Sarawak Tribune: What’s your hair care routine like?
Violet: It is very minimal. I usually just fix it in the morning. On top of that, I go to the salon every three or four days for a wash, depending on my schedule. I’ve tried hairstylists in China and KL, but none could get it right like my stylist in Kuching.
Sarawak Tribune: How do you sleep without ruining your hair?
Violet: That’s a popular question! I often joke that I use a floating ring just like a doughnut pillow. But in truth, I keep it a secret. It adds a bit of curiosity and fun.
Sarawak Tribune: What about your skincare routine?
Violet: I believe it’s mostly genetics. I’m a bit chubby, so my skin doesn’t wrinkle easily. I do have freckles from sun exposure, but that’s natural as we age. I’ve never considered plastic surgery.
Sarawak Tribune: Do you play sports?
Violet: No, I’ve never been into sports. I’m more of a home person. I handle most house chores, though not gardening.
Sarawak Tribune: Do you enjoy cooking?
Violet: Yes, I can cook, if my family requests something, I’ll do it. Otherwise, I’d rather eat out. I usually cook beef stew, curry chicken, and recently made chicken rice. They are all simple but as long as they suit my taste, they are good to go.
Sarawak Tribune: What’s your favourite colour?
Violet: Anything that doesn’t make me look dull. I often wear navy blue and red as red is my party colour. Lately, I’ve been fond of grapefruit green.
Sarawak Tribune: Do you get stressed?
Violet: Sometimes, especially before DUN sittings, when I’m unsure which issues to raise. But people often approach me with matters to bring up, which helps. With my legal background, I’m used to managing stress. I don’t deal with work issues at night unless it’s urgent like a house on fire. Otherwise, I keep things within office hours. I think worrying doesn’t help, so I always remind myself that things will be okay.
