KUCHING: Over the past eight years, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has demonstrated visionary leadership, steering Sarawak towards remarkable achievements in unity, economic growth, and historical awareness.
Political analyst Dick Lembang Dugun said that Abang Johari’s governance has transformed the state into a beacon of progress and inclusivity, earning widespread praise from citizens and analysts alike.
“Regarding economic development under Premier leadership, Sarawak achieved high-income status ahead of schedule with our state gross national income (GNI) per capita surpassing RM61,442 in 2022.
“This highlights his dedication to driving economic growth and prosperity for the state. He has also ensured a balanced approach to development between urban and rural areas, with rural progress advancing fast.
“Rural connectivity projects have been successfully implemented, accompanied by numerous programmes and aid initiatives. These efforts have significantly enhanced the economic well-being of the people,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.
He also said that Premier Abang Johari’s emphasis on unity has been pivotal in fostering a harmonious and inclusive society.
“The inclusivity approach used to be successful in uniting the Sarawakians. All Sarawakians must feel the benefits of development and the promotion of a vibrant, inclusive, and fair society.
“The prosperous unity in Sarawak is one factor contributing to political stability. Through this political stability, Sarawak is attractive to foreign investors,” he added.
Furthermore, he said that Abang Johari has consistently emphasized the importance of understanding Sarawak’s history, particularly among the younger generation.
“By focusing on MA63, the younger generation should know the history of the formation of Malaysia. By doing this, Abang Johari also aims to instil a sense of pride and motivation among Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, to empower the region,” he said.
Adding on, Lembang said one of the Premier’s key achievements lies in advancing the digital economy.
“As a strong advocate for digital transformation, he launched the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018–2022, with establishing Sarawak as a digital powerhouse as the goal.
“This initiative has significantly enhanced the state’s digital infrastructure and services, making Sarawak a leading example of digital economic progress in Malaysia.
“Additionally, the Premier has prioritized sustainable development, focusing on renewable energy and environmental conservation.
“Sarawak is renowned for its advancements in hydropower and is now exploring hydrogen as a clean energy source, marking the emergence of a new economic sector in the modern era,” he said.
Most importantly, he mentioned that the Premier advocates for Sarawak’s autonomy and rights.
“Leveraging the state’s political stability, he has worked to secure greater financial and administrative autonomy for Sarawak within Malaysia, reinforcing the state’s position and influence in the federation,” said Lembang.
