KUCHING: A Chinese New Year celebration was held at the Sarawak Society for the Blind (SSB), bringing together members of the visually impaired community for an inclusive festive gathering yesterday.

The programme was organised by the Mr and Miss Native Borneo Alumni Sarawak, with support from the Mr and Miss Native Borneo Organisation and Anavau Events, reflecting a collaborative approach to community service.

A total of 27 participants from the blind community attended the celebration, which featured interactive activities, angpao distribution, open karaoke sessions, and the presentation of festive gifts.

In a statement, the organisers said the activities were designed to promote inclusion, friendship and cultural appreciation.

Organising chairman, Des Marcus, said the initiative aimed to provide encouragement and a sense of belonging while marking the festive season.

“The programme was designed not only to celebrate Chinese New Year, but also to bring joy and strengthen the spirit of inclusion within the blind community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Judith Pudin, the Director of Anavau, praised the organisers and volunteers for their commitment to creating an inclusive environment.

“Programmes like this help strengthen community ties and raise awareness of the needs and capabilities of persons with visual impairments,” she said.

SSB Kuching chairman Ronald Thomas Law, meanwhile, expressed appreciation to all partners, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the event’s success.

He said the celebration reflects SSB Kuching’s ongoing commitment to empowering the blind community through social engagement, cultural participation and programmes that enhance quality of life.
