SIBU: Two major volleyball initiatives kicked off this week at the Sibu Volleyball Association (SVA): a training camp for Under-14 and Under-16 players, and the first phase of SUKMA 2026 selections.
The camps, running from June 4 to 8, reflect SVA’s strong focus on both youth development and the search for high-level talent.
The three-day youth training camp aims to help young players improve their skills and teamwork, while the SUKMA Phase 1 selection serves to identify top athletes who could represent Sarawak at the national games.
Coach Pang Sii Chuong said the sport’s development has gained momentum in schools, thanks to SVA’s outreach efforts and growing support from school administrators.
“This is a three-day training camp for U14 and U16 players in Sibu, and the SUKMA 2026 selection is also being held for three days,” said Coach Pang, who is part of the programme.
He noted that the sport’s growth has been especially promising since the centre’s establishment last year, with more primary and secondary school students showing interest in volleyball.
“Development has been going very well since we started. More students are getting interested in volleyball now, especially after we set up this centre.
“The school management has also been very supportive, which is very encouraging for us,” he said.
Coach Pang added that SVA’s efforts to strengthen engagement at the school level are already showing results, and more initiatives are on the way.
“I believe it’s going to be even more exciting for volleyball in Sibu soon.
“Coming up, SVA plans to collaborate with the Education Department to organise a school league for volleyball,” he said.
Also in attendance at the camp was Sarawak Volleyball Association (SAVA) Chairman, Datuk Moh Wung Ming.
