KUCHING: The voluntary resignation of FAM executive committee members comes amid a governance crisis, seen as a move to protect the credibility of Malaysian football.
Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said the decision reflected collective accountability, while preventing further reputational damage at the international level.
“From my perspective, this decision is better than having their positions as FAM council members abruptly revoked by FIFA. With these resignations, we hope a thorough clean-up process can be carried out by those who will take over the management of FAM,” he told TVS when contacted yesterday.
Pekan said the resignations opened the door for comprehensive reforms and restructuring, allowing the organisation to be rebuilt based on principles of good governance, transparency, and integrity.
He also stressed the importance of trusting existing mechanisms, including the roles of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), to ensure recovery efforts are implemented independently, without external interference.
“Our hope is that these efforts will ultimately restore the image of Malaysian football before FIFA and AFC return the management of the sport to FAM,” he said.
Pekan added that the reforms must be implemented thoroughly to rebuild fan confidence and lay a stronger foundation for long-term development. – TVS
