BINTULU: The floods that recently struck several areas in this region have left a lasting impact on local residents.
Many homes were severely damaged, with furniture and household items destroyed and unable to be salvaged due to the sudden rise in water.
The continuous heavy rain forced victims to face the daunting task of cleaning thick mud and flood debris that filled their homes.
In addition to property damage, the pervasive stench in the affected area further compounded the emotional and physical burden they bear.
However, despite this calamity, the resilience of the people of Bintulu remains unshaken. Though their homes and valuables were destroyed, they remained hopeful that restoration would soon come.
Volunteers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that stepped in to assist with the cleanup efforts at victims’ homes also made significant contributions.
What is even more impressive is that some of the volunteers, despite being affected by the flood themselves, still came forward to help.
For Haidir Zaly, a volunteer and flood victim, now is the time to clean his own family’s home after working tirelessly to assist the affected community.
“This is the time to rise together. Even though we are tired, we cannot let other victims fight alone,” he said, when met at his family’s residence in Kampung Tinggal (Sebiew), near the Sebiew Fish Market.
He hopes that the cooperation between the community, volunteers, and NGOs will speed up the recovery process and help restore normal life to the affected population.
