KUCHING: About 100 volunteers planted 30 trees at Taman Lee Ling here as part of a global environmental campaign promoting climate action and community sustainability.

The activity was organised by ASEZ WAO, an international young adult volunteer group under the World Mission Society Church of God, through its worldwide “Mother’s Forest” initiative to expand green spaces and strengthen environmental awareness at the community level.

A representative of ASEZ WAO said the project reflects a nurturing approach to environmental protection inspired by a mother’s care for her children.

“Through this effort, we hope to enhance carbon absorption, improve air quality and raise awareness on environmental sustainability within local communities,” the representative said in a statement.

Volunteers comprising ASEZ WAO members, their families and colleagues worked together to prepare the soil, plant saplings and water the trees to support healthy growth.

The species planted included Bintangor, Ru Ronang, Shorea macrophylla and Sapotaceae.

The Padawan Municipal Council supported the programme by providing logistical assistance including a sheltered venue, food, topsoil, fertiliser and equipment. Deputy chairman Mahmud Datuk Seri Ibrahim also joined the planting activity in support of the initiative.

Local participation was also evident, with Taman Lee Ling Residents’ Committee chairman Abdul Aziz mobilising residents to take part.

Beyond tree planting, ASEZ WAO carries out environmental programmes worldwide including the “Green Earth” urban clean up campaign, “Blue Ocean” river and coastal conservation efforts, and the “No More GPGP” initiative to reduce plastic waste.

In Malaysia, the group has undertaken similar activities at Batu Kawah Riverbank Park, Pulau Melayu in Miri and Pantai Tanjung Batu in Bintulu, as well as planting 150 trees in Sungai Rait, Bakam, Miri.

Globally, ASEZ WAO has received about 600 awards from governments and organisations including the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Green World Award in recognition of its environmental and community service efforts.
