KUCHING: A 35-year-old waiter was sentenced to a total of 11 years’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court and Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to eight criminal charges, including those linked to a viral car chase at the 4th Mile Flyover last Saturday (Jan 31).
Alex Ujai admitted to all charges, five of which were connected to the incident that left a police officer injured after being dragged by a vehicle while attempting to arrest him during the chase.
Before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, he faced charges under Section 37(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance (Sarawak) 1958, Section 457 of the Penal Code, Section 186 of the Penal Code, and Section 332 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, before Sessions Court Judge Iris Awen Jon, he was charged under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.
He also faced three separate charges under the Road Transport Act 1987 before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the charge sheets, Alex drove in a careless and dangerous manner on Jan 31, losing control of his vehicle and colliding with three other vehicles during the incident.
For the Penal Code offences, he was charged with refusing to cooperate with police during an inspection and attempting to flee, as well as intentionally causing injury to a police officer who was carrying out his duties as a public servant.
Facts presented in court revealed that a police team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) had been conducting patrols when they spotted a white Perodua Viva believed to be driven by Alex, who was wanted in connection with a housebreaking case reported on Jan 30.
Police tailed the vehicle and attempted to stop it at the 4th Mile Flyover while identifying themselves as officers.
However, the accused sped off in an attempt to escape, ramming into several vehicles along the way.
During the incident, a police officer sustained injuries after falling while trying to stop the suspect’s vehicle.
Alex later abandoned the car on the flyover and fled on foot but was eventually apprehended near a factory in the vicinity.
Investigations found that the accused had obstructed police officers from performing their duties by fleeing and had also caused injury to an officer during the course of the arrest.
In a separate offence, he was found in possession of a watch reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained and failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for it.
Police arrested him for the offence on the same day as the chase.
He also admitted to a lurking housebreaking charge under Section 457 of the Penal Code for an incident on Jan 30 at about 3.30 am along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho.
The complainant discovered several items missing and later identified Alex through CCTV footage entering the house to commit theft.
A police report was subsequently lodged, leading to ‘Ops Lejang’ being launched to track down the suspect.
Additionally, Alex pleaded guilty to drug-related offences after he was found in possession of amphetamine and methamphetamine on May 5, 2025 at about 9.00 pm.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutors, Chuah Kai Sheng, Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly and Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan.
Investigations were led by Investigating Officer, Inspector Awang Iswandi Awang Mahmuddin.
The accused was not represented by legal counsel.
