SIBU: Sarawak’s multicultural unity and harmony remain a cornerstone of the state’s continued progress, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

During his Chinese New Year walkabouts in the town, Tiong personally greeted relatives, friends, and local residents at 10 households over the past two days.

He said the annual visits are more than a tradition but rather a platform to reconnect with the community and gain first-hand insight into local concerns.

“These visits allow me to understand the perspectives and realities that formal meetings often cannot reveal.

“Policies and plans must ultimately make a difference on the ground, and spending time with the community reminds me of that responsibility,” he said in his Facebook posting.

Highlighting the state’s multicultural fabric, Tiong stressed the importance of protecting Sarawak’s hard-earned unity.

“Issues should not be unnecessarily politicised, and social stability should never be compromised for short-term political gain.

“Regardless of party affiliation, the people’s interests must come first,” he said, urging all communities to maintain harmony and avoid misunderstandings over differing political views.

Tiong, who is also Dudong state assemblyman, emphasised the importance of unity within political parties.

“Cooperation and solidarity remain the foundation of steady progress. Our priority should be serving the people and advancing development and livelihood matters, not getting caught up in unproductive political disputes,” he added.
