KUCHING: Walk With Me (WWME) 3.0 brought together cancer survivors, supporters, and health enthusiasts here Sunday (Feb 23).
Organised by the Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN), the event took place from 6am to 9am at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound here.
Participants shared their perspectives with Sarawak Tribune, highlighting the importance of the event in increasing public awareness on cancer while demonstrating solidarity with those affected by the disease.
JUITA SENAWI, 68, Breast Cancer Survivor:
I am a proud member of SCAN, and my motivation for joining this event comes from my own journey as a cancer survivor. As a survivor, I take part in raising awareness about cancer so that the public does not feel ashamed or hesitant to speak up about their struggles when facing this illness.
By increasing awareness, people will know where to seek help and gain access to vital information about cancer, empowering them to face the challenges ahead with confidence.
My message to all cancer survivors is simple: You are not alone. You have a community of friends who understand, support you, and are here to share your journey. Together, we can face this with strength and hope.
KORIN BUKA, 35, Operator:
I always make it a point to join runs held at MBKS because I enjoy the experience and the positive energy that comes with it.
What motivates me to participate in this walk is, first, the fun, it’s a great way to stay active. Secondly, it benefits my health, keeping me fit and energised.
Beyond that, events like this raise awareness and show support for those battling cancer. By participating, we promote a healthy lifestyle and stand in solidarity with cancer patients and survivors. I encourage more people to join and make a difference.
JAZJEF ABOY, 25, Airport Kargo:
For me, the main reason for joining this event is health. My mother is a cancer survivor, and through her, I learned about activities like this.
Her journey has been a source of inspiration for me, and participating in this event is my way to honour and support her.
I strongly believe that events like this play a crucial role in spreading awareness about cancer and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Regular exercise, no matter how small, can make a big difference in maintaining good health. Even if you feel unmotivated, push yourself to stay active, your health is worth it!
NOR JELITAWANIS, 40, Administrative Assistant:
My motivation for joining this event is to support the organisation. As someone who jogs regularly, I find this event meaningful and beneficial.
Working at a hospital, I see many cancer patients at Sarawak General Hospital, which makes me appreciate the importance of events like this.
It should be held annually to encourage more participation. I hope for more charity runs in the future.
