KUCHING: The universal values reflected during Christmas should be embraced and practised in daily life, as they nurture compassion, tolerance and brotherhood that form the foundation of unity in Sarawak.

In his Christmas 2025 message, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the celebration carries deep meaning beyond religious observance, as it promotes values essential to maintaining harmony in Sarawak’s multiracial and multireligious society.

“Christmas is a meaningful celebration that symbolises love, sincerity and the spirit of giving and sharing. These universal values should be embraced and practised in our daily lives, as they nurture compassion, tolerance and brotherhood, which form the foundation of unity in the state,” he said.

Wan Junaidi also expressed pride in Sarawak’s long-standing open house tradition during major religious celebrations, including Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai Dayak, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas, describing it as an important platform for fostering mutual understanding and closer ties among the people.

He encouraged Sarawakians to take advantage of the festive season to visit relatives, friends and acquaintances to strengthen bonds of affection, solidarity and togetherness.

“This practice proves that differences do not divide us; instead, they make us stronger, more united and more mature as a society living in peace, mutual respect and care. Let us continue to preserve this spirit by celebrating diversity with respect and tolerance.

“This is a time to strengthen relationships, forgive, and spread love to those in need,” he said.

Touching on global humanitarian efforts, Wan Junaidi said recent involvement of international volunteers, including Malaysians, in the Sumud Flotilla Humanitarian Mission reflected the same universal values of sincerity, sacrifice and compassion, regardless of religion, race or background.

He also expressed hope that this year’s Christmas would be celebrated in an atmosphere of joy, familial love and harmony, bringing well-being, hope and deeper understanding to society.

“On this meaningful occasion, my wife, family and I respectfully extend our Merry Christmas greetings to all Christians in Sarawak and wherever they may be,” he added.
