KUCHING: Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) enters a new chapter of strategic reform and statewide inclusivity with the appointment of Datuk Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar as its new president.
Wan Lizozman was elected unopposed during the SBA annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday (Jun 13).
In his inaugural address, Wan Lizozman expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to lead with transparency, humility, and a clear strategic direction.
“This appointment is a great honour and a profound responsibility.
“I call upon all affiliate members to remain united in strengthening the SBA,” he said in a statement issued by the association.
Joining him in the top leadership line-up is Ting Wei Ping, who was also appointed unopposed as deputy president.
To ensure the association’s leadership is inclusive and representative of the entire state, Wan Lizozman announced that all presidents of SBA’s affiliated district associations would be automatically appointed as vice presidents.
“This structure will guarantee statewide participation in high-level decision-making, allowing for more balanced and equitable representation from across Sarawak,” he added.
He also paid tribute to his predecessor, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, for his exemplary leadership and contributions in building a strong foundation for SBA.
In further appointments, Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad was named as secretary, while Jonathan Kho took on the role of treasurer.
Both, according to Wan Lizozman, bring substantial experience and are expected to play key roles in advancing SBA’s strategic goals.
Notably, Wan Khalik’s appointment also sees him becoming an automatic member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Supreme Council, representing Sarawak at the national level.
“This is a significant step that ensures Sarawak has a strong voice in shaping national badminton policies,” he said.
Addressing challenges inherited from the past, including SBA’s temporary suspension, Wan Lizozman stressed the urgent need to restore public trust and institutional credibility.

“It is time for us to rise and rebuild the confidence of all stakeholders — from grassroots athletes to strategic partners and state leaders. Transparency, professionalism, and progress will be the core of our administration,” he said.
With SUKMA 2026 on the horizon, Wan Lizozman reaffirmed SBA’s commitment to athlete development and high-performance preparation.
He pointed to Sarawak’s breakthrough gold medal win in badminton at SUKMA 2024 — achieved by the state’s women’s singles player (Wong Ling Ching) — as a powerful motivator to elevate Sarawak’s badminton ambitions.
As part of the association’s reform agenda, Wan Lizozman announced the formation of several key working committees focused on athlete development, technical matters, tournaments, and commercial growth which will be finalised at the upcoming SBA Council meeting.
The AGM, attended by all affiliated associations from across the state, marks the beginning of a more inclusive, accountable, and forward-thinking era for Sarawak badminton.
