MUKAH: Warisan Vaie Group was crowned the champion of the bermukun (a performing arts tradition that combines dance, drumming, and counter-poetry) competition held in conjunction with Kaul Mukah 2025 at the Kaul Festival Site, recently.

Representing the Bintulu Melanau Association, the group took home a cash prize of RM2,000, along with a trophy and certificate.

Their performance, themed ‘Cinta Berahi’ (Passionate Love), captivated the judges and earned the highest score of 80.3 per cent.

The runner-up was the Cenderawasih Group, whose Laila Majnun-themed performance scored 77 per cent.

They received a cash prize of RM1,000, a trophy and a certificate.

Royston joins others in a bermukun performance during the event.

Third place went to Warih Melanau from Kampung Bakong Oya, who scored 70 per cent and won RM800 in cash, a trophy, and a certificate.

Meanwhile, the special award for Best Costume and Makeup was awarded to the Seroja Limbang Group, while the Best Pantun (traditional Malay poetic form) award went to the Cenderawasih Group.

The prize-giving ceremony was officiated by the Federal Economy Minister cum Mukah Member of Parliament, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.

A total of 12 groups participated in the competition, representing Mukah, Oya, Daro, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.

The event received an enthusiastic response from the local community, drawing a crowd of over a thousand visitors.

Also in attendance were Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine, Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip, and Temenggong Hendi Suhai.
