KUCHING: The state-level Warriors’ Day 2025 commemoration ceremony held at the Sarawak Heroes’ Monument, Taman Budaya here today served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Malaysia’s armed forces and police veterans in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
The event was graced by the presence of dignitaries, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, and attended by veterans of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police.
Among those who drew attention were three recipients of the Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB), the nation’s second-highest award for bravery.
They were Sgt (Retired) James Mering Imang, 77, Sgt (Retired) Dajai Anggie, 82, and LCpl (Retired) Bajau Ladi, 78.
While delivering his keynote address, Lt-Gen. Datuk Stephen Mundaw, Special Duty Officer at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, underscored that Warriors’ Day is not merely a moment of remembrance, but a call to rekindle national patriotism and unity among Malaysians.
“This is not just a day to reflect, but a moment that calls us to nurture our love for this country.
“We are here to remember those who gave their lives and those who still walk among us, including our former security personnel who served selflessly without fear or fatigue,” he shared.
He added that the peace and independence enjoyed today are the direct result of the unwavering courage and selfless sacrifices of the nation’s heroes.
“They risked everything to protect our beloved land, a spirit that we must remember, honour, and pass on to future generations,” he said.
He also paid tribute to the enduring patriotism of veterans, calling them the living embodiment of national resilience while quoting a Malay proverb.
“When a tiger dies, it leaves behind its stripes; when a man dies, he leaves behind his name,” he opined.
“The names and deeds of our heroes, including those present today, will remain etched in history as champions of our national dignity and sovereignty.”
The ceremony also served as a call for unity and discipline among Malaysians, especially the younger generation, to ensure that Malaysia remains peaceful and sovereign.
“Let us never forget the sacrifices made, and let us carry forward the spirit of patriotism,” Mundaw concluded.
