KUCHING: It was a historic moment for Sarawak as three state water supply agencies were consolidated into a single entity, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak government has taken a bold step to transform and reform water management in the state.
He said the merger of Kuching Water Board (KWB), Sibu Water Board (SWB) and LAKU (Northern Region Water Board) Management Sdn Bhd will allow water resources to be managed with greater efficiency and proper governance.
“We cannot work in silos. It must be well-coordinated. Besides water for households, we also need to supply industrial water.
“And therefore, we must have an entity that can manage water for ordinary consumers as well as for industrial needs.
“These two functions must be managed properly. Thus, this common entity, Sarawak Water, will provide water to everyone, including industries.”
Abang Johari said this when officiating the launch of Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd at the Borneo Conference Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Tuesday (Aug 26).
He stressed that the new entity must also look into reclaimed water.
He said treated wastewater that is reused for purposes such as irrigation and industrial cooling is part of the state’s green sustainable economy.
Meanwhile, during a press conference after the launch, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government remains committed to supplying clean water to remote settlements through the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (Sawas) programme.
He said Sarawak is fortunate to have abundant water resources, but they must be managed properly.
“The cost of managing water is high. And despite 60 years of independence, there are still many places without water due to the high cost and scattered nature of our settlements.
“Nevertheless, we have decided to supply clean water using new technology through Sawas.”
