KUCHING: A monsoon surge is forecast to occur between Feb 4 and Feb 7, potentially bringing heavy and continuous rainfall to Sabah and Sarawak, according to the latest analysis from weather models.
In light of this, the Meteorological Department (MET) has issued a strong wind and rough seas warning in the South China Sea waters, effective from Feb 4-7.
Members of the public are urged to stay updated on the latest weather conditions by regularly checking the MET Malaysia website at www.met.gov.my, following the official social media accounts, and downloading the myCuaca app for latest and reliable information.
Meanwhile, as of 12.15 pm today (Feb 2), the number of evacuees from flood, landslide and fire incidents in Sarawak had decreased to 12,163 people.
The State Disaster Management Committee reported that 61 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) remain in operation, while 15 have been closed.
In Kuching division, six PPS have closed at various locations, including at Kampung Sungai Beduan, SJK C Chung Hua Batu Kawa, Haji Kamaruddin Hall, SK Sejijak, Kampung Keranji Hall, and Pangkalan Bau Hall.
The PPS located at Mesra Simunjan Hall in Samarahan division, Ensabang Padang Bilon hall in Serian division, three PPS in Sibu division, one PPS each in Betong and Kapit division, have also been closed.
However, Serian division has the highest number of active PPS, with 19 centres still operating and housing 2,627 people.
This is followed by Samarahan with 12 PPS, sheltering 1,771 people.
In Bintulu, eight PPS remain open, housing 5,099 people, while 12 PPS in Miri are accommodating 1,220 people.
The Sibu division continues to house 1,179 people in six PPS, while Mukah is sheltering 62 people across the three PPS.
