KUCHING: Datuk Wee Hong Seng has been sworn in for a new term as Mayor of Kuching South today, reaffirming his commitment to the city.
“I am humbled and deeply honoured to receive this reappointment.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, and the people of Kuching South for their continued trust and support,” Wee said today at his swearing-in ceremony at the MBKS building.
He highlighted the vital role that local governments play in the daily lives of the community, addressing everything from waste management to public safety.
“We are the first line of response to issues that impact everyday life, and while our work may seem mundane, it directly affects the well-being of our people,” he remarked.
Wee also took the opportunity to commend the dedicated staff of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), praising their unwavering commitment to public service.
“Every clean drain, every working streetlight, and every well-maintained park is a reflection of their hard work and dedication,” he noted.
Acknowledging the outgoing councillors, Wee expressed gratitude for their valuable service and welcomed the new councillors with optimism.
“Let us work together as one unified team, driven by integrity and a common purpose to serve the people of Kuching South,” he said.
The recent collapse of a wall in an old building in the city served as a reminder of the challenges in preserving heritage buildings while ensuring public safety.
“While this incident thankfully caused no loss of life, it highlighted the need for us to safeguard our historical structures while ensuring they remain safe,” Wee stated.
He assured the public that MBKS, in collaboration with the Sarawak government and relevant agencies, was taking swift action to investigate the cause and improve inspection processes for such buildings.
Looking ahead, Wee laid out his vision for Kuching South’s future, emphasising the importance of urban development, sustainability and digital transformation.
“As our city grows, the local government must adapt, becoming more responsive, inclusive and focused on the people we serve,” he said.
In line with Sarawak’s PCDS 2030 vision, Wee reaffirmed MBKS’ commitment to supporting smart city initiatives, green practices and data-driven governance.
“Kuching South is not just a city; it is a reflection of our people’s values, culture and dreams,” he said, stressing the importance of preserving Kuching’s cultural identity.
“Together, let us build a future that honours our past, and creates a brighter tomorrow for all generations to come.
“This is ‘My City, Your City, Our City’,’’ he said.
