KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development is taking proactive steps to extend welfare aid and emotional support to the families of the nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who lost their lives in Telok Intan on May 13.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry is working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other relevant agencies to ensure timely and comprehensive support for the victims’ next of kin.

“We don’t have to wait for them to apply for assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Instead, we will offer it proactively.

“However, as for counseling services, we do not want to disturb them for now because their emotions are still unstable,” she told a press conference at the Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy Festival 2025 here today (May 17).

Nancy added that counseling support would also be provided at an appropriate time to ensure the victims’ families continue to receive mental and emotional support.

Nancy said the matter had been brought to the Cabinet meeting and that her ministry is currently reviewing the amount and forms of assistance the next of kin have already received through existing channels.

“They have insurance coverage, as well as assistance from the police and related agencies. So, we will see what more can be provided.

“Usually, we do channel aid, but we need to verify the actual amount they have already received,” she said.

The May 13 accident occurred around 6.45 am on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, when an FRU truck collided with a gravel-laden lorry. The nine officers, from FRU Unit 5 Ipoh, were returning from duty after providing security at a religious parade.

All the victims have been identified as Sergeant S. Perumal, Corporal Nurit Pandak, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, Corporal Mohd. Pozli Jaudin, Corporal Akmal Muhamad, Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd. Azlan, Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, and Constable Mohd Hilmi Mohd Azlan.
