KUCHING: The Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board (LAKMNS) demonstrated its leadership in modernising the mosque institution and empowering communities through its successful organisation of the Maal Hijrah Festival 1447H/2025M.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, who delivered the closing speech at the festival on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, praised LAKMNS for its dynamic and innovative approach in making mosques relevant to current times.

“This festival has not only elevated the role of the mosque but has also brought together people from diverse backgrounds through activities that are both informative and entertaining,” she said.

Sharifah Hasidah highlighted LAKMNS’ ongoing efforts to champion the welfare of the ummah through holistic initiatives covering spiritual, social, educational and charitable aspects.

Additionally, she stated that LAKMNS will soon construct a new minaret for the Sarawak State Jamek Mosque, which will incorporate solar energy technology.

“This forward-thinking step is a sign of LAKMNS’ commitment to environmental sustainability and positions mosques as exemplary models in driving eco-friendly initiatives,” she added.

She also emphasised that mosques should serve as more than places of worship, becoming centres of knowledge, moral development, and community unity, in line with the tradition set by the Prophet Muhammad upon arriving in Madinah.

“Mosques have always been the heart of community development; centres for spiritual focus, knowledge dissemination, and fostering brotherhood,” she said.

Sharifah Hasidah called on Muslims in Sarawak to support mosque programmes actively and help transform mosques into community reference hubs and platforms for welfare and outreach.

She also expressed hope that LAKMNS would continue to organise high-quality programmes that nurture a strong Islamic identity and strengthen the mosque’s role in daily life.
