KUCHING: The Sarawak government remains committed to strengthening rural communities, particularly in safeguarding ethnic traditions, cultures, and languages from being lost to modernisation.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said these efforts align with the government’s broader goal of ensuring that progress reaches all segments of society, regardless of location.

In line with this, the Ngiling Bidai Ceremony for the 2025 Gedong District Gawai Dayak Celebration is not only a gesture of gratitude for the harvest and a continuation of the Gawai spirit of thanksgiving but also serves as a platform to foster unity, familial bonds, and togetherness among the state’s diverse communities.

“Moreover, it plays a vital role in preserving and elevating the customs, culture, and heritage of the Dayak people, ensuring they are not lost to time.

“This also supports our rural development agenda and promotes inclusive well-being for all,” he said in his speech read out by Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee at the event held at a hotel here on Sunday (Jun 29).

He noted that 55 villages from the Gedong area took part in organising the celebration, representing the Ulu Zone, Pangkor Zone, and Proper Zone.

“The participation of all these villages reflects the strong spirit of cooperation, unity, and dedication among the local community in making this meaningful cultural event a success.

“This celebration not only strengthens cultural values but also showcases the community’s support for Sarawak’s social progress and unity,” he added.

He also expressed confidence that Sarawak’s strength lies in its unity and harmony amidst diversity, making the state both unique and resilient.

He urged the people to continue embracing the values of tolerance, mutual respect, and collaboration for the continued advancement of the state.

“I also encourage all representatives present tonight to remain committed to fostering unity, harmony, and a sense of family.

“At the same time, let us redouble efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of the Dayak community and strengthen the ties between the people and their leaders for a more inclusive and harmonious development journey,” he said.
