KUCHING: WFL United got off to a flying start in the 2nd edition of the Haji Sophie Shariee President’s Cup Football Championship 2025 after defeating MLNG 4-1 in their opening Group A match at the Bintulu Stadium on Saturday.
The emphatic win placed WFL United at the top of their group standings, earning them three crucial points as they begin their campaign in the tournament, which is organised by the Bintulu Division Football Association (BIFA).
The official opening of the championship was officiated by Steven Kong, Special Officer to the Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament for P.217 Bintulu, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Also present at the event were BIFA president Haji Sophie Shariee, Bintulu MYSED Officer Mr. Barin Medan, and vice president of the Sarawak Football Association (FAS), Haj Khairuddin Qalam Daud, alongside several other dignitaries and invited guests.
In his remarks, Haji Sophie expressed gratitude to all supporting agencies, stakeholders, and football enthusiasts who contributed to the smooth organisation of this year’s tournament.
A total prize pool of RM28,000 is up for grabs this season. The champion will walk away with RM15,000, a trophy, and medals, while the runner-up will receive RM7,000 along with a trophy and medals.
The two semi-finalist teams will each earn RM3,000, also accompanied by a trophy and medals.
