KUCHING: A 19-year-old motorcyclist has been arrested after a video of him allegedly performing a wheelie on a public road went viral on social media.

The teenager was detained by police on Sept 4 at around 11.20 am in Kampung Siol Kandis here after investigators identified him as the rider seen in the video uploaded to the Sarawak Roads Update (SRU) Facebook page.

The clip showed the motorcyclist allegedly lifting the front wheel of his motorcycle while riding along Jalan Salahuddin.

The district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division also seized a brown Yamaha LC135 believed to have been used in the stunt.

The young offender is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.

Police said they viewed such behaviour seriously, as wheelies on public roads not only put the rider and pillion at risk but could also endanger other road users.

Motorcyclists are warned against risking their lives for a few seconds of attention on social media.

Firm actions would continue to be taken against anyone caught riding dangerously on public roads.
