FOR millions of Malaysians, the automobile is more than just a means of transport — it’s a significant investment. And like any investment, it requires the right protection.
Often referred to as the “lifeblood” of a vehicle, engine oil plays an instrumental role in preserving engine health, improving performance, and ensuring smooth journeys.
In fact, with proper maintenance and the right engine oil, even high-mileage vehicles can last a long time.
Understanding the types of engine oil
In Malaysia, drivers have access to a wide range of engine oils designed to suit various vehicle types and performance demands.
Mineral oil, for instance, is the most basic form, derived directly from crude oil. It is a suitable choice for older vehicles or those that don’t require high-performance lubricant.
On the other end of the spectrum lies synthetic oil. It’s a top-tier option, meticulously engineered to deliver superior performance.
It boasts exceptional viscosity control, enhanced resistance to high temperatures, and extended intervals between oil changes, making it ideal for modern vehicles and highperformance cars.
For those looking for a middle ground, semi-synthetic oil provides a blend of both mineral and synthetic options, balancing efficiency and affordability. It offers better protection than mineral oil, without the full cost of synthetic.
These oils include special additives to reduce leaks and wear, helping older engines perform more reliably.
This growing demand for genuine lubricants is projected to grow in the Malaysian market, which is expected to increase from 293.15 million litres in 2025, and is expected to reach 334.26 million litres by 2030, at a CAGR of 2.66% during the forecast period (2025- 2030).
The hidden danger of counterfeit products While Malaysians are spoiled for choice when it comes to engine oils, the market isn’t without its risks. Counterfeit engine oils, which can look strikingly similar to genuine products, pose a serious threat to vehicle health.
Using fake engine oil can result in poor lubrication and sludge build-up, which ultimately leads to costly repairs. Unfortunately, because engine oil is often out of sight and out of mind, many drivers underestimate its importance.
It’s not uncommon for consumers to prioritise price over genuineness or assume all oils perform the same.
This misconception has created room for counterfeit products to thrive, endangering not just vehicles, but also the safety of those behind the wheel.
Recognising this, SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), has launched the Genuine Engine Oil Certification Scheme to protect both consumers and the automotive ecosystem.
Counterfeit engine oils not only compromise vehicle performance but also endanger consumer safety.
To address this, SIRIM QAS International introduced the Genuine Engine Oil Certification Scheme, which ensures that certified products undergo a rigorous testing process following SIRIM 58 standards.
These tests include evaluations for viscosity, thermal stability, contamination levels and overall formulation integrity to ensure oils meet the highest performance and safety benchmarks.

“We want to empower consumers to make confident, informed decisions.
Through stringent testing and certification, we are not just creating awareness, we are helping Malaysia take a stronger stance against counterfeiting,” said Ir. Zarina, Principal Testing Engineer at SIRIM QAS International.
To further support consumer protection, engine oil authenticity can be easily verified through a simple three-step process:
Use the SIRIM Mobile App — Scan the unique SIRIM Security Label found on certified engine oil
This growing demand for vehicle health Using fake engine Engine Oil Certification Scheme to packaging.
Check the SIRIM Conformity Label — Look for the official SIRIM Mark, embedded with anticounterfeiting features. Buy from trusted sources — Ensure your engine oil comes from authorised retailers or official brand stores.
Choose the right oil and drive towards smarter maintenance Engine oil isn’t a one-size-fitsall solution. It depends on your vehicle’s age, model and driving conditions. Start by referring to the car manual outlining the recommended oil type and viscosity grade. The climate also plays a role.
Malaysia’s hot and humid weather demands oils that can withstand higher operating temperatures to keep your engine running smoothly. It’s also important to be wary of bargain deals.
While low-priced engine oils may seem like a good idea, they often come with hidden risks.
Counterfeit oils may offer little to no protection and, in some cases, could even harm your engine.
Investing in a trusted product from the start helps protect your engine and ensures your vehicle stays reliable in the long run. Engine oil does more than just reduce friction; it helps regulate the car temperature by dispersing heat, especially during long drives or traffic congestion.
However, no oil last forever. Over time, its ability to protect and clean degrades.
This is why consistent oil changes are essential not just for performance but also for fuel efficiency, emission control and engine longevity.
Raising public awareness about the importance of genuine engine oil and proper maintenance practices can make a positive difference.
For players in the automotive industry, this presents an opportunity to educate and empower drivers to make informed decisions.
Ultimately, when it comes to vehicle health, it’s not just about what’s under the hood — it’s about the decisions you make outside of it.
