SIBU: Stanford Ryan Sidi, a gifted Sape player from Sibu, took the performing arts world by storm with his original masterpiece, “Borneo Journey,” which was composed in just five days.

This exceptional composition earned him a gold medal at the 27th World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA).

“For the original work category, I won a gold medal and world division champion. I composed the song myself, and there is a story behind it. It tells about my journey here,” he said.

Stanford made these remarks when approached by reporters upon his arrival at Sibu Airport, Wednesday night (July 10).

A self-taught musician, Stanford began playing the Sape in 2017, learning through YouTube and Facebook.

“When I knew I had some skills, I looked for people who were good at playing the Sape, mainly from Kuching, as many people there play the instrument. They helped me a lot too.”

In addition to his gold medal in the Original Work Music category under the Senior Division, Stanford also clinched silver medals in the Contemporary, Classical, and Open categories, along with a bronze medal in the Jazz category.

His achievements have been met with overwhelming joy.

“The feeling is indescribable. I am extremely happy. I can’t believe that I achieved the title of World Champion for the Original Division. The joy is beyond words.”

Looking ahead, Stanford has set his sights on releasing a Sape album.

“I hope everyone will receive it well. Maybe in a month or two,” he said.
