KUCHING: The iconic Wisma Melayu Sarawak is on track for completion, with hopes of opening in time for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Located at Petra Jaya, this architectural marvel pays homage to Malay heritage, drawing inspiration from the traditional tengkolok headdress.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan recently announced that the project has reached approximately 85 per cent completion.

Final touches, including electrical systems, water supply, interior design, and landscaping, are currently underway.

Once completed, the RM73-million facility will feature a grand hall capable of accommodating 1,500 guests, along with a museum, gallery, office spaces, a café and a surau (prayer room).

Its design also incorporates elements of ‘keringkam’, a traditional embroidered Malay shawl, further highlighting the building’s cultural significance.

Strategically positioned near major sports complexes, Wisma Melayu Sarawak will benefit from improved infrastructure.

Plans are in place to expand the nearby road to six lanes, enhancing accessibility.

Additionally, the building will be integrated into Kuching’s Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) network, ensuring seamless connectivity across the city.

The first phase of construction is expected to conclude by May 7, with a second phase planned to introduce commercial spaces and a hotel.

As anticipation builds, Wisma Melayu Sarawak is poised to become a landmark that not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Malay community but also stands as a symbol of modern development in Sarawak.
