BINTANGOR: A 35-year-old woman was arrested by the police for allegedly running an illegal lottery business without a valid licence at the market area here.
Meradong District Police Chief, DSP Tansli Mering, said the arrest was made at 5:55 pm on Thursday following a raid carried out by the district police’s task force team.
He said during the raid, police inspected the premises and found several items believed to be used in the sale of unlicenced public lottery numbers.
“The woman was detained, and the items were seized before being taken to the Bintangor Police Station for further investigation,” he said in a statement.
Inspection revealed that the suspect had no prior criminal record.
Initial investigation showed that she had been operating the illegal lottery activity for about two weeks to earn extra income.
Tansli said the case is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, upon conviction.
He also advised the public not to get involved in illegal gambling activities and urged anyone with information to contact the police at 084-693222.
