MERADONG: A woman in her 50s was arrested for allegedly being involved in an online vehicle sale scam, with losses amounting to RM43,596.75.

Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the suspect was arrested at 11.45 am on Monday (Apr 6) by a team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division.

He said the suspect is believed to have acted as a mule account in the scam.

“Initial investigations found that the victim was attracted to a Facebook advertisement offering a Toyota Hilux at a low price.

“The victim then made several payments to an account provided by the suspect,” he said in a statement.

Tansli said checks revealed the suspect is also linked to police reports in Serian, Dang Wangi and Lutong.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Members of the public are advised to verify information with the police before making any financial transactions.

Victims may also contact the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) hotline at 997 or the Bintangor police station at 084-693222.
