SIMUNJAN: A local woman became the first fatality of the new year following a pick-up truck crash at Sabal Kruin Simunjan, early this morning (Jan 1).
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Simunjan station were dispatched to the scene, about 62km away, after receiving a distress call at 7.40 am.
Upon arrival, they discovered the pick-up truck had plunged into a water-filled ditch by the roadside, and the female driver was found pinned underneath the vehicle.
Firefighters promptly carried out the extrication works to remove her, but paramedics later confirmed that the victim, identified as 35-year-old Mc Magdeline Jampang, had died at the scene.
Her body was handed over to the police for transport to the hospital for a post-mortem.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 9.35am.
