KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here fined a cashier RM3,300, in default three weeks in prison, for illegally purchasing a public lottery ticket.
Mina, 35, pleaded guilty before senior assistant registrar Abdurrahman Abrar Jarni to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
If convicted, she could face a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment for six months, or both.
The offence occurred at a grocery store along Jalan Penrissen here at around 3.30pm on Oct 26.
According to the case facts, police conducted an ‘Ops Dadu’ raid on the premises following suspicions of unlicensed lottery ticket sales activity being held.
In the operation, the woman was detained for allegedly engaging in online gambling using a mobile phone. She was found in possession of a mobile phone, a slip of printed lottery number, a pen, a mobile printing machine, and 18 pieces of cash.
A gambling expert’s report confirmed the confiscated paper contained unlicensed public lottery numbers.
Deputy public prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar prosecuted while the woman was unrepresented by counsel.
