KUCHING: A 37-year-old woman was fined RM10,000, in default three months and one day’s imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Apr 10) for engaging in online gambling last month.
Dai Siaw Hung pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
She was charged under Section 48(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 for each gaming machine seized and imprisonment of up to five years upon conviction.
The offence was committed on March 19 at about 3.15 pm at a convenience store near Jalan Stutong, where she was found operating a gaming activity using a smartphone.
Facts of the case revealed that police conducted an operation at the premises following information on illegal online gambling activities carried out via a smartphone.
Dai was arrested on the same day. Items seized included a smartphone, RM210 in cash, and a piece of paper bearing a user identification number and password.
Investigations revealed that she was conducting online gambling activities in a public place, constituting an offence under Section 48(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The case was prosecuted by Prosecution Officer, Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Illin, while the accused was unrepresented.
