Woman fined RM2,500 for possessing illegal lottery ticket

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local woman RM2,500 in default five months in prison for possessing an unlicensed lottery ticket.

Norzaimi, 37, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a maximum prison sentence of six months or both, upon conviction.

The offence was committed at a grocery shop along Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa, at around 2.20 pm on Feb 16.

According to the case facts, a team from Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) raided the premises and arrested the woman suspected of being involved in the sales of unlicensed lottery tickets.

Police also seized Norzaimi’s phone, RM96 in cash, and a piece of paper with numbers, which are believed to be illegal lottery ticket.

A gambling expert’s report confirmed that the seized items were linked to an unlicensed public lottery.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while Norzaimi was unrepresented by counsel.
