KUCHING: A woman in her early twenties was apprehended by the police yesterday (Aug 18) on suspicion of abandoning her newborn baby, who was discovered next to a dump site in Moyan Square, Batu Kawa, earlier yesterday.
According to Padawan district police acting chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong in a statement, they successfully located the suspect and brought her in for questioning at approximately 11.20am.
The suspect is a local resident and is not married.
The case is currently under investigation in accordance with Section 317 of the Penal Code, pertaining to the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years of age by a parent or caretaker.
If proven guilty, the accused individual will face imprisonment for a period of up to seven years, a fine, or both penalties combined.
Regarding the newborn baby girl, Lim noted that she is currently receiving medical care and observation at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
The baby was discovered inside a cardboard box adjacent to a dump site by a waste collection worker at 6.50am yesterday.
Lim added that the police are also coordinating with the Sarawak Social Welfare Department to take appropriate action.
